The Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended 10 individuals suspected of engaging in pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and illicit trade in petroleum products.
In addition to the arrests, the Command seized nine vehicles carrying illicitly refined petroleum products concealed in cellophane bags, along with 28,225 liters of illegally refined AGO, commonly known as diesel.
Among the detainees is Chinedu Michael, a repeat offender who had been previously granted bail two months ago for his involvement in illegal petroleum refining.
During a parade at the Command Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Basil Igwebueze, the State Commandant, highlighted that the suspects were apprehended in various locations across the state through the joint efforts of the Anti-vandal Unit and the 6 Division of the Nigeria Army.
Commandant Igwebueze emphasized that the suspects will face legal charges, with the confiscated products and vehicles being forfeited, and the proceeds remitted to the federal government.
He also reiterated the Command's unwavering commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure, and called for a reevaluation of laws pertaining to crude oil theft to strengthen enforcement measures.
