The UK warship, HMS Trent, has arrived in Nigeria for the second time to bolster maritime security efforts.
According to a statement from the British High Commission, the visit aims to provide capacity training and support for maritime security in the region. HMS Trent, carrying a skilled boarding team of UK Royal Marines and a Puma surveillance drone, departed from Gibraltar. Its mission is to assist West African allies in building capabilities to combat illegal activities at sea and contribute to stability in wider West Africa.
Given the significant £6 billion worth of UK trade passing through the region, part of Trent's role is to ensure stability across the Gulf of Guinea. This involves training partner navies to combat criminal activities, strengthening partnerships, and sharing knowledge, all while conducting patrols to enhance security.
Commander Tim Langford, HMS Trent’s Commanding Officer, expressed his honor in returning to Nigeria during the ship's three-month deployment to West Africa. He emphasized the commitment to finding a lasting solution to maritime insecurity in the region. The Royal Navy's long-standing engagement in the area and enduring partnership with the Armed Forces of Nigeria were also highlighted.
Jonny Baxter, UK Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, emphasized the significance of this deployment in showcasing a globally engaged Britain addressing shared international security challenges. Nigeria is recognized as a crucial and valued defense partner for the UK in West Africa. The two countries face common threats, and collaboration is key to overcoming them and enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
This deployment is part of the broader international initiative led by the Friends of the Gulf of Guinea (FOGG). FOGG supports Gulf of Guinea nations in implementing regional maritime security frameworks, ultimately promoting stability in a region that has experienced disruptions in international shipping, endangering seafarers and impacting local economies.
