The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is fervently dedicated to bolstering Nigeria's renewable energy and rural electrification endeavors, especially during these testing times. In the forthcoming year, REA is poised to empower a quarter of a million households with electric mobility, mini-grids, and home systems, effectively fortifying the nation's electricity landscape.
Director Mutari Ibrahim underscores the agency's triumphant strides. Over 1,650 kilometers of solar streetlights have been deployed, catalyzing progress in power supply, security, and economic prosperity in rural enclaves. Notably, REA has accomplished 1,403 projects under the capital budget, encompassing the implementation of solar streetlights, mini-grid projects, standalone home systems, and grid extension initiatives.
Through multifaceted programs like the Energising Education Programme and the Energising Agriculture Programme, REA has channelled over 65 megawatts of power across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. This dynamic agency has been a linchpin in bestowing over 500 megawatts of power, electrifying countless communities, generating half a million jobs, and attracting an impressive two billion dollars in investments to the renewable energy sector over the last decade.
Critical to these achievements are the partnerships fostered with key entities such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the Global Alliance for People and Planet. Collaborative ventures with organizations like the Rocky Mountain Institute, Japan International Cooperation Agency, and Sustainable Energy for All have bolstered REA's reach and impact.
The agency's purview extends to cooperative efforts with the Agence Française de Développement, the United Kingdom Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility, the European Union, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, among others. This expansive network underscores REA's commitment to a globalized approach in advancing renewable energy solutions.
In 2022, as part of the National Poverty Reduction and Growth Strategy Programme, REA secured an additional four billion in capital injection grants, earmarked to provide clean power standalone home systems to more than 50,000 locations. These encompass rural households, micro-businesses, educational institutions, and faith-based organizations.
From 2020 onward, REA has played a crucial role in bringing light to the lives of more than 7.5 million people, comprising 1.5 million Residential unit. This achievement has been made possible through the execution of 130 mini-grid projects and the distribution of 1.3 million Independent residential energy system. The agency's recent feat, securing a 750 million-dollar facility in collaboration with the World Bank, serves as a shining example of its unwavering dedication to advancing renewable energy and rural electrification efforts precisely when Nigeria needs it the most.
The institutional assessment, conducted by a globally renowned organizational re-engineering firm, rigorously evaluated REA's project delivery, institutional structure, and processes. The resulting recommendations, meticulously reviewed and approved by the agency's board and the minister, have translated into significant accomplishments. Collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Power, the National Assembly, and anti-corruption agencies are a testament to REA's commitment to ongoing reform, even in the face of formidable challenges.
