"The UK Commits $2 Billion to Green Climate Fund"

"The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announced a significant financial contribution of £1.62 billion ($2 billion) to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) at the recently concluded G20 Summit in India.

This marks a 12.7% increase from the UK's previous commitment for the period of 2020 to 2023. The GCF, established by 194 countries after the Copenhagen Accord at COP15, is the largest global fund dedicated to assisting developing nations in reducing emissions and adapting to climate change impacts.

Mr. Sunak urged G20 leaders to collaborate ahead of the upcoming COP28 Summit in December, emphasizing the importance of both lowering carbon emissions and supporting vulnerable economies in dealing with climate change repercussions. He stated, 'The UK is taking substantial steps to fulfill our climate promises, through decarbonizing our own economy and aiding the world's most vulnerable in handling climate-related challenges.'

The UK has demonstrated leadership in international endeavors to combat climate change, committing to allocating £11.6 billion towards international climate finance from 2021 to 2026.6. This recent announcement is a significant stride toward meeting this commitment, following the Prime Minister's earlier declaration at COP27 to triple funding for climate adaptation.

Since 2011, the UK's climate aid spending has benefitted over 95 million individuals in coping with climate change effects, leading to a reduction or avoidance of over 68 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Dr. Richard Montgomery, the UK's High Commissioner in Nigeria, praised the recent donation to the Green Climate Fund. positioning the UK as one of its major donors. He stressed the critical role the GCF plays in supporting countries like Nigeria in transitioning to a sustainable, low-carbon economy, creating employment opportunities, ensuring food security, and combating poverty. Nigeria's vulnerability to and increasing impact from climate change necessitates substantial support to access high-quality climate finance commensurate with its size and needs. Therefore, active collaboration between the GCF and the Nigerian Government for effective fund utilization and access is encouraged."
