Breaking News: Government Strike Agreements With NlC/TUC

Due to the actions of the government and the subsequent rise in commodity prices, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a notice for a strike. This strike was set to begin on Tuesday, the 3rd of October, 2023, but before this could happen, the Federal Government organized a meeting to prevent it. After extensive discussions, the following agreements were reached:

1. The Federal Government will provide a wage increase of N35,000 (thirty-five thousand Naira) exclusively for all Federal Government employees, starting from September. This will continue until a new national minimum wage is officially established by law.

2. A committee dedicated to determining the minimum wage will be formed within one month from the date of this agreement.

3. The Federal Government will halt the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT) on Diesel for a period of six months, effective from October 2023.

4. The Federal Government commits to allocating N100 billion for the procurement of high-capacity CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) buses for widespread public transportation in Nigeria. Additionally, provisions are being made for an initial batch of 55,000 CNG conversion kits to initiate a program for converting vehicles to run on auto gas. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to establish state-of-the-art CNG stations across the country. The rollout of this initiative is set to kick off in November, starting with pilot programs in ten different campuses.
