A farmer named Oro Umaru from Ba’abete Fulani Camp in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State found himself before a Kwara State Magistrates Court in Ilorin, facing an accusation of culpable homicide.
The allegation stemmed from Umaru's act of severing the wrist of his neighbor, Abubakar Sanda, in the Fulani Camp within the LGA. This act was purportedly motivated by suspicions of an affair between Sanda and Umaru's wife.
Umaru was presented with a one-count charge of attempted culpable homicide, in violation of section 299 of Nigeria's penal code laws, as detailed in the Police First Information Report filed by Sanda Mohammed, the victim's brother.
The report recounts the incident on the evening of September 8, 2023, when Abubakar Sanda was returning home from Kaiama kara market and was confronted and attacked by Oro Umaru. During the ensuing investigation, Umaru admitted to the suspicions and confrontations, ultimately leading to the severe injury to Sanda's right wrist.
The accused was not allowed to enter a plea, and the police prosecutor, Gbenga Ayeni, requested that the court detain Umaru at the Federal Correctional facility pending the completion of the investigation.
Magistrate Gbadeyan Kamson granted the request, ordering the suspect's remand and scheduling the case for further proceedings on October 11, 2023.
